Agent-Based Application in Embedded Systems

Abstract: As networking and embedding technologies advance, it is more possible to design autonomous and distributed intelligent entities capable of solving complex network problems. Emergent agent technology, successfully applied in distributing computing, was also applied to electric power system. The paper present some developments in power system area that exploit agent technology and present a simple simulation.

Obstacle Recognition by the use of different wavelet families in Visible and Infrared Images

Abstract: In image processing, applications of wavelet analysis are widespread and cover many fields of scientific research. Considering a fusion between visible and infrared cameras, we investigated the visible and infrared spectrum images from the module recognition view point . Different types of wavelet functions are used as features in the recognition module. Different recognition rates are obtained by the use of different mother wavelet functions (as Haar, Daubechies, Coiflet, Biorthogonal and fractional B-splines) in visible and infrared images. Good accuracy rates are achieved with small feature vectors (starting form 64 features).

WWW Based Remote Control Application in Optoelectronic Systems

Abstract: The proposed paper presents development work related to create WWW based remote control application in optoelectronic systems for teaching Applied Photonics. In order to minimize the cost at the end-user domain, simple WWW browser with fundamental plug-in (Java applets, HTML Pages and LabWindows applets) to support the remote control and video transmission functionality of the system is proposed. The hardware components of the system were created using dedicated embedded circuit solutions. The proposed system was tested with remote teaching of MSc. students.

Fractal and Multifractal Properties of Teleworker sessions generated traffic

Abstract: The network engineer has to resolve the trade-off between communication resource capacity and QoS requirements. Accurate modeling of the offered traffic load is the first step in optimizing resource allocation algorithms such that provision of services complies with the QoS constraints [1,17]. Multimedia communication is enabled by wide variety of services and applications. These ones are characterized by heterogenity and that’s why the description of these by simply model is a complicated problem [2,3,19]. Teleworking – the act of working outside of the conventional workplace and communicating with coworkers by means of information and communications technologies will be a standard work arrangement for majority of all corporate employees in near future.The main problem of teleworking workplace planning is modelling and dimensioning of communication resources which are used by the teleworkes and multiplexing gain at network nodes [5,16].The other question is to measure effectiveness of teleworking introducing [4,5,18,20]. In this paper multifractal spectrum is studied for empirically measured signals generated by teleworkes’s activities. The scaling and moment generating functions analysis method is used. The network traffic dynamic study and signal classification are enabled by this method. Experimental results are presented for chat, desktop sharing and netmeeting sessions traces. The spectrums comparison is showing different spectrum shape based by application and by network protocol.

Defining an Ontology for Diagnosis Based on Radiographic Images

Abstract: Medical practice protocols or guidelines contain more or less precise recommendations to assist practitioners and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific circumstances. In order to reach their potential benefits, protocols must fulfill strong quality requirements. Medical bodies worldwide have made efforts in this direction, but mostly using informal methods such as peer review of protocols. In this paper we present a different approach, namely the quality improvement of medical protocols through formalization. As a result of our formalization effort, we have uncovered a significant number of anomalies in these two protocols.

Effect of noise reduction using rough set theory on the accuracy of k-NN classification of radiological reports

Abstract:
Radiological reports can vary considerably in length, are not systematic and may be vague. This introduces a lot of noise. Classifying them becomes rather inaccurate and therefore nearly useless. Thus a technique of improving the accuracy is really needed. This article presents the way of using the rough sets theory for reducing the noise and increasing the accuracy of of k-NN classification of radiological reports.

S3E LabVIEW – Xilinx platform

Abstract: FPGA d evices provide a powerful environment for digital design. For engineering education, the flexibility of these circuits constitutes a major advantage. Xilinx University Program offers a large variety of hardware platforms for use in mid and high level technical education. Digilent Inc. works in co-operation with Xilinx to make the latest digital technology available and affordable both for Universities and students. Recently, National Instruments decided to support in LabVIEW 8.5 the Spartan 3E Starter Board, one of the most successful members of the Xilinx educational board family. The paper describes the usage of the hardware/software environment, based on a simple example project.

Determination of the Instants of Glottal Closure from Speech Wave Using
Wavelet Transform

Abstract: In this work, a time-scale framework for analysis of glottal closure instants is proposed. As glottal closure can be soft or sharp, depending on the type of vocal activity, the analysis method should be able to deal with both wide-band and low-pass signals. Thus, a multi-scale analysis seems suited. The estimation of Glottal Closure Instants in voiced speech is based on a dyadic wavelet filterbank.

Traffic Sign Detection with use of Invariant Transforms

Abstract: This paper describes a system for traffic sign recognition. The system is based on two steps, fast preprocessing, and detail recognition step. This makes the system architecture effective from the point of recognition rate. Results and potential of the developed system is discussed.

Implementation of the Mojette Transform and Haar Wavelet in .NET

Abstract: The idea behind implementing the Mojette Transformation and Haar Wavelet in .NET was that with the help of Microsoft’s managed framework it’s easier to introduce a different prospect of the digital image analysis an processing which can be easier understood by peoples/students and can be used for teaching, simulating and test purposes as well. The main concept was to create the basic foundation of a new environment which due to the .NET framework can be extended in many different ways and by peoples with different background knowledge it could be enriched as well. Although some rules has to be set, but the flexibility of the .NET environment allows us to put all the best possible things into one software so with the help of the framework it’s really simple to add remove or edit the features of this program.

Mojette Transform, Hardware Implementation

Abstract:
Development of imaging devices (digital cameras) require intensive researches to find new methods for handling internet, distributed databases and image processing. One of these methods is the Mojette transform (MOT). The MOT is used mainly in image processing applications. There was several software implementations using personal computers [5] and [7], but these application were implemented only for locally stored images. There are some applications where real time computing is a must, but the implementations before referred can not accomplish this requirement. The Mojette transform is implemented under different operating systems and for different processors presented in [17] , helps the performance analyses of the MOT and also let to conclude the needs for reconfigurable hardware implementation. There are mentioned several aspects of the Mojette transform theory. There is presented the implementation of Mojette transform in Field Programmable Gate Arrays using a reconfigurable platform. It is also analyzed the Inverse Mojette transform (IMOT) and the implementation.

Real time EMG pattern recognition system for hand postures

Abstract:This paper presents a novel real-time EMG pattern recognition system for classification of hand postures. Because of the nonstationary nature of EMG, the feature vectors are extracted using wavelet analysis. For dimensionality reduction of features vector we propose a solution based on principal component and independent component analysis. The classification is made by using a feed forward artificial neural network. For the hardware implementation of the system we used FPGA circuit.

FPGA-based discrete wavelet using distributed arithmetic

Abstract: This paper presents theoretical and practical aspects in conjunction with hardware implementation of wavelet transform using distributed arithmetic. Implementing the multiplier unit using distributed logic, the designer can save hardware resource. The solution presented in this paper is using MatLab-Simulink environment to implement the algorithm in FPGAs.

Embedded Ambient Assisted Living System

Abstract:
This paper presents the design of an embedded system for the assistance of persons with handicaps, implemented into the Digilent Nexys Board and Nexys 2 Board. The unit is defined in VHDL, and it targets a Xilinx Spartan-3 and Spartan-3E FPGA. Some of the modules, like the ps2 interface, keyboard controller, UART controller, port_selector are generic and can be easily reused without changes in other designs. The circuit was designed on a Windows XP PC using Xilinx ISE8.2.03i CAD tool and Cadence Orcad tool.
